Europe is trying to strengthen its industrial base while accelerating the transition to cleaner technology and responding to rising defence needs. New support for net-zero manufacturing and defence projects reflects a broader push to build strategic capacity closer to home and reduce reliance on vulnerable supply chains.
The European Commission has announced €3.4 billion for 77 net-zero projects, alongside €168.2 million to support eight defence projects expected to mobilise €1.26 billion. These initiatives signal ambition, but funding announcements are only the beginning: delivery, private investment, energy costs, skills and regulatory certainty will determine whether projects translate into durable industrial growth.
The central question is whether Europe can turn strategic spending into competitive factories, resilient supply chains and jobs—or whether structural barriers will slow the revival.
The story behind the number.
